The Philippine men’s national hockey team took home the silver after falling short against defending champions Mongolia in the IIHF Ice Hockey Challenge Cup of Asia final in Kuala Lumpur, 6-3, last Saturday, Mar. 9.

Mongolia had taken revenge after the Filipinos had upset them in the eliminations to bag the top seed of Group A.

The loss ends the Philippines’ undefeated streak heading to the championship game. It also improves their third-place finish in the 2018 edition.

Mongolian Bayarsaikhan Jargalsaikhan led the charge with a hat-trick for the defending champions.

The North Asians immediately upped the ante by zooming to a 3-0 lead but the Filipinos immediately fought back to tie things up at 3-all, courtesy of Julius Santiago in the second period, and one each from Jose Cadiz and Jan Regencia in the payoff period.

However, Jargalsaikhan and Erdenesukh Bold drilled two goals to put the game away from the Philippines.

Filipino skipper Steven Füglister was hailed as Tournament MVP after scoring seven goals and assisting on eight.

Compatriot Paolo Spafford was named the most effective goalie of the tournament, swatting away 91.2-percent of his opponent’s attempts.

Jan Aro Regencia meanwhile was awarded the Player of the Team award with six goals and an assist in the tournament.
